With New Year’s resolutions fresh on their minds, consumers are planning to spend more money on groceries and less on eating at restaurants in 2024, according to a new report by 84.51°, Kroger’s in-house data firm. Their January Consumer Digest report shows that more than half (58%) of shoppers have set spending goals or resolutions for the year, with many aiming to reduce their discretionary spending. Nearly one in five (19%) respondents to the 84.51° survey said they plan to spend more on groceries over the next 12 months, and 53% said they’re going to beef up their contributions to savings and investments. Meanwhile, 57% said they plan to spend less this year on dining out, carry out, and food delivery services. Shoppers also aim to get healthier this year with 58% saying they plan to follow a diet. Nearly a third (32%) of respondents said they were unfamiliar with the popular GLP-1 prescription weight loss drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, and 44% said they have no interest in using them to lose weight.
